Canadian advice on how to reform US Healthcare?

Canadian Travel Insurance | Posted by admin
Oct 16 2009

I am very unhappy with my US healthcare system.

If you get sick in America, are born with a pre-existing condition, and you are the caregiver of a young child, here are your choices in the the country with the highest GDP on earth:

1) Die to save your hardworking family fortune by not seeking help, or

2) Move onto the street

Do you see a problem with our healthcare system in America? Americans apparently do not. One response to this was as follows

"I didn’t realize being born with a pre-existing condition meant you were a complete idiot. Because, in the US, if you work hard and smart, you make money and can pay for health care. So what is it? Sick people with pre existing conditions are stupid and too imbecilic to work hard? Or are they using that as a reason to not work hard."

Source: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=ArnNvlaMn0BNXGP7ejwPq.Lsy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20091010112926AAY0AvM

So let me get this straight:

Suppose there are 2 people in America: Person A and Person B.

Person A was lucky not to be born with a pre-existing condition and could therefore afford health insurance. He was a hardworking man but he did stupid things every so often. He lost money gambling, he got lots of speeding fines, he littered, he breached promises and had to pay for his poor judgment decisions.

Now Person B! Person be was unluckily born with a pre-existing condition and no insurance company would insure person B. His best bet was not to get sick if he could help it. He worked the same job as Person A. He was MUCH wiser than person A. Person B was law-abiding, was frugal, did not get speeding fines.

However, every time Person B got sick, which was 3 times as often as Person A because of how Person B was born, he was out FAR more money than Person A’s fines and penalties.

This is the less of our society then, do NOT get sick if you are born with a pre-existing condition.

And in the end, the heirs of Person A lived more enriching, well-traveled lives than Person B.

This is EQUAL OPPORTUNITY?!!!!! This is Promoting the General Welfare. This is a Democratic Republic. This is worth going to Iraq to die to fight for. This is the country Kennedy said "Ask what you can do for your country."

Do Canadians not see a problem with this healthcare system?

Good travel insurance plan for Canadians?

I will be travelling to Asia for 6 months, and apparently travel insurance is a lot more expensive than I had planned for. I’m 19, and I don’t have a membership anywhere….does anyone know of any reasonably priced places I can go to get travel insurance?

After retirement in other countries, did you know that:?

Canadian Travel Insurance | Posted by admin
Sep 22 2009

1. Australians look forward to freedom
2. Italians and Spanish are prone to do nothing
3. Britons and Americans most likely travel abroad for long periods.
4. Germans like to travel also, but prefer sporting activities
5. French go for gardening
6. Canadians do lots of charity work
7. Japanese have retirement allergies. Forty percent pursued paid work after retirement. That’s 10 times more than France.

Isn’t that interesting?

The international survey was taken by the French insurance group Axa.

Does anyone know good Canadian travel insurance?

I called Manulife insurance – wow, I spoke to three different CSRs and they’re all rude and arrogant. Imagine insurance people were nice.

I was wondering if there are any good Canadian travel insurance companies – from your own experience?

Is this Information Accurate? If so, would you say it’s Ethical?

Canadian Travel Insurance | Posted by admin
Aug 31 2009

This question is regarding Canadian tax and employment laws.

I was told by a good friend that if you are an hourly worker you can incorporate yourself, then have your cheques made out to your company name, rather than your personal name. If you do this, you can then reap some tax benefits for travel, supplies, you can choose not to pay into CPP and Employment Insurance (EI) etc etc.

He even went to far as to say the next car you buy, you could claim that for osme tax credits.

Now, I am wondering if this is a) legal, b) correct information (I doubt it) and c) ethical. Because if this is true, it’s defintely tempting. I asked him if it was even legal, and he said yes, what’s the difference if you have a partner or a boss. If you’re incorporated, you’re doing work and receiving pay, just like now. I said the difference as far as I see it is in business you give back by employing people. I’m not employing anyone.

Beyond that ethical hitch, it’s also basically lying. Isn’t this fraud? He knows a few people who have done it and they all claim that it’s on the level but I doubt that. It feels like a scam to reap some financial benefits to me. It’s definitely annoying though, knowing I’m worlking as much as these geuys, yet they are paying less in tax and making more money in the end.

Thank you for any and all input.
Thank you AB.

Why Conservatives Condemn Canadian Healthcare System Even Though They Have No Experience With it?

Canadian Travel Insurance | Posted by admin
Aug 17 2009

I know plenty of Canadians who love their healthcare system. Yeah, they do come to the US for better treatment, but many Americans also travel within the US and seek treatment at premiere hospitals like Johns Hopkins and Cleveland Clinic. How many American insurance companies will pay for you to get treatment in those elite hospitals? And do you always get an appointment right away? You can’t!
LONG LINES ARE COMMON HERE AS WELL. ONE TIME I HAD TO WAIT THREE WEEKS TO GET AN APPOINTMENT.
Faux: But no country pays more than the US, still!
Iluvmyhubby: You didn’t read what I wrote. They are come here, but Americans also travel to elite university hospitals IF THEY CAN AFFORD IT. How many Americans can do that.
That goes to show that Conservatives don’t read and jump to conclusions. Ha ha.
DON’T TELL ME THAT US INSURANCE COMPANIES DON’T DENY TREATMENT!
Linda K: The same kind of statistics can be provided for US patients.
in the US, its the insurance companies that ration healthcare by denying treatment. So, what’s the difference?

[repost] Do i need a passport?

Canadian Travel Insurance | Posted by admin
Aug 02 2009

I guess it wasn’t clear in my question that i am a CANADIAN CITIZEN, I want to return to CANADA by LAND I am NOT flying. And I don’t have a passport because I didn’t know I needed one I thought the new rules didn’t come into effect until next June. I drove to the USA before the rules came into effect and my visit is almost done I am leaving on August 17. I have been searching on the net for answers and I contacted the Border Agency and the responded with this:
Canadians Returning Home

Make sure you carry proper identification for yourself and any children traveling with you to assist in confirming your legal right to enter Canada. Proper identification includes a Canadian birth certificate, a Canadian passport, a permanent residence card, a citizenship card or a certificate of Indian status.

I find it a little confusing. I do have a Canadian (ONTARIO) Birth Certificate, Drivers License, And Social Insurance Card. Do you think that would be enough? If not where can I get a Canadian passport in the San Francisco Bay Area? And it says I need a guarantor I don’t obviously have one because I have been here only a few months, & it also says the guarantor has to be a canadian citizen with a passport?!? I feel really dumb right now!!! I don’t know what I’m suppose to do?!

I am a US citizen w/out health insurance. If I move to Canada can I get treatment for cancer?

Canadian Travel Insurance | Posted by admin
Jul 27 2009

If I travel to Canada on a tourist visa (I am a US, not a Canadian citizen) and just go into a hospital there..will they treat me? Would they offer me full treatment for cancer (chemo, hospital stay in etc) or will they kick me out? What do they cover?
this was just a case study, to see people’s opinions of the uninsured..luckily it’s not a real situation.

Michael Moore’s Sicko?

Canadian Travel Insurance | Posted by admin
Jun 30 2009

I’ve always loved my health care system (canadian) but after seeing his documentary I have gained a newer appreciation for everything I have.

I want Americans to tell me what was inaccurately depicted in the movie. Is it the fact that you get denied health insurance if you’re sick, or all the loopholes insurance companies try to use to get out of paying your bills?
Please, I want actual answers. None of the usual neocon dramatic answers of social health care=government makes all your decisions=communism. I also don’t want to hear about how Moore is a ‘fat liberal and an american traitor’. Just facts.

Also keep in mind that repeated propaganda against the canadian/european systems won’t work with me, seeing how I used to live in europe, and am now residing in Canada, so I have a better perception of the health care level here than an american that has never traveled out of country has.

Good morning. Some information and a question for you.?

Canadian Travel Insurance | Posted by admin
Jun 24 2009

One of the biggest debates the we continually have here on this forum is National Health Care. I'm finding more and more information with regards to other countries who have this and how it's failing.

Here are some excerpts and a link:
Who's Really 'Sicko'

In Canada, dogs can get a hip replacement in under a week. Humans can wait two to three years

"I haven't seen 'Sicko,' " says Avril Allen about the new Michael Moore documentary, which advocates socialized medicine for the United States. The film, which has been widely viewed on the Internet, and which will officially open in the U.S. and Canada on Friday, has been getting rave reviews. But Ms. Allen, a lawyer, has no plans to watch it. She's just too busy preparing to file suit against Ontario's provincial government about its health-care system next month.

Her client, Lindsay McCreith, would have had to wait for four months just to get an MRI, and then months more to see a neurologist for his malignant brain tumor. Instead, frustrated and ill, the retired auto-body shop owner traveled to Buffalo, N.Y., for a lifesaving surgery. Now he's suing for the right to opt out of Canada's government-run health care, which he considers dangerous. Ms. Allen figures the lawsuit has a fighting chance: In 2005, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled that "access to wait lists is not access to health care," striking down key Quebec laws that prohibited private medicine and private health insurance.

In the U.S., 83 House Democrats voted for a bill in 1993 calling for single-payer health care. That idea collapsed with HillaryCare and since then has existed on the fringes of the debate–winning praise from academics and pressure groups, but remaining largely out of the political discussion. Mr. Moore's documentary intends to change that, exposing millions to his argument that American health care is sick and socialized medicine is the cure.

It's not simply that Mr. Moore is wrong. His grand tour of public health care systems misses the big story: While he prescribes socialism, market-oriented reforms are percolating in cities from Stockholm to Saskatoon. Mr. Moore goes to London, Ontario, where he notes that not a single patient has waited in the hospital emergency room more than 45 minutes. "It's a fabulous system," a woman explains. In Britain, he tours a hospital where patients marvel at their free care. A patient's husband explains: "It's not America." Humorously, Mr. Moore finds a cashier dispensing money to patients (for transportation). In France, a doctor explains the success of the health-care system with the old Marxist axiom: "You pay according to your means, and you receive according to your needs." It's compelling material–I know because, born and raised in Canada, I used to believe in government-run health care. Then I was mugged by reality.

Consider, for instance, Mr. Moore's claim that ERs don't overcrowd in Canada. A Canadian government study recently found that only about half of patients are treated in a timely manner, as defined by local medical and hospital associations. "The research merely confirms anecdotal reports of interminable waits," reported a national newspaper. While people in rural areas seem to fare better, Toronto patients receive care in four hours on average; one in 10 patients waits more than a dozen hours.

This problem hit close to home last year: A relative, living in Winnipeg, nearly died of a strangulated bowel while lying on a stretcher for five hours, writhing in pain. To get the needed ultrasound, he was sent by ambulance to another hospital.

In Britain, the Department of Health recently acknowledged that one in eight patients wait more than a year for surgery. Around the time Mr. Moore was putting the finishing touches on his documentary, a hospital in Sutton Coldfield announced its new money-saving linen policy: Housekeeping will no longer change the bed sheets between patients, just turn them over. France's system failed so spectacularly in the summer heat of 2003 that 13,000 people died, largely of dehydration. Hospitals stopped answering the phones and ambulance attendants told people to fend for themselves.

http://socglory.blogspot.com/

Seriously, folks… Is THIS what we want for our country? A system that is failing elsewhere?
There have to be other alternatives, don't you think?
There is no doubt that our system has many flaws, but good grief, I can't begin to imagine it being improved under government control. I'm merely stating that there have to be other alternatives.

Moving from Canada to UK?

Jun 21 2009

I have been thinking to move to UK for some time now. I have been there many times and I was debating my decision for few years and now I am ready to make a move.I really want to go back to Europe. I am a Canadian citizen and live in Canada, Toronto for 16 years, even I was born in Europe and I miss the lifestyle, the fact that you can travel anywhere within hours and less taxes to pay. I do have some friends who live there who could help me initially, but if someone can help me what to do, where to go and things like that.Any websites that you could recommend would be great. I am insurance broker here in Toronto, and am 31 years old, and have pretty good educational background in business. Can somebody give me some guidelines. Thanks so much.
Ok, I found enough information from the different sources, but if somebody knows a forum that relates to the subject that would be wonderful.

I would like to know how much it will cost at a hospital/child birth center for birth? Any centers that you know of that we may contact in advance. Where would it cost less?
Thanks,

No we don't think we will get Canadian citizenship so plz don't go in that direction. thx

Travelling to Monterrey Mexico?

Canadian Travel Insurance | Posted by admin
Jun 13 2009

I’m a Canadian citizen, and I’m travelling with my family from Toronto to Monterrey, Mexico in December. I’ll be driving from Georgetown/Austin to Monterrey. What is the border like? I heard the Columbia Bridge is a better option then the other border crossing, is that true? Also, is the drive to Monterrey dangerous? I’ll be staying in Monterrey for about 2 days, around the downtown area, is walking around safe? Also, do I need Mexican car insurance? How much would a typical Mexican meal cost? What’s a good hotel in the downtown area for 0-200 USD per night in a double room after Christmas? Thanks. 10 points for best answer

Question about Canadian Health Insurance for a Dutch Immigrant! Help please!?

Canadian Travel Insurance | Posted by admin
May 19 2009

I had a question about health insurance for dutch immigrants to Canada. The situation is like this;

On the 31st of May, I intend on moving to Toronto, Canada for a year or more. By then I will have a Temporary Working Permit, and a place to stay. My current Dutch Health insurance will cover me untill the end of July, even while I am in Canada, looking for a job.

My question is about how the health insurance system works there for people like me. Once my own dutch health insurance stops, will I have to get a canadian health insurance by going to an insurance company and setting it up? Or will I perhaps automatically get a canadian health insurance as soon as I find work and signed a contract?

Or, do I have to get health insurance here in Holland, meant for people that travel the world alot (a globetrotter health insurance)? Those ones are really expensive, so yeah :P . I do not need a residence permit because I am dutch, and I will have a working permit.

How would this work? The kind of work that I am aiming for is Graphic Designing, and I will work and live in Toronto, Ontario.

Hopefully someone with any knowledge about this subject can help me out, I looked everywhere for information without any success, you are my last hope.

Canadian billed with ‘sketchy’ medical bills- will this affect a trip into US?

Canadian Travel Insurance | Posted by admin
May 17 2009

I am Canadian and visited the US a few years ago. The trip resulted in me visiting the hospital for a few hours, but i received no medical treatment. Once I got home I received some 'sketchy' medical bills. Where my name and address were located on the bills, someone had white-ed out whatever was previously printed there and had written my name and address (partially incorrect) with a pen in blue-ink. I contacted my travel insurance company and sent them photocopies of the bills, but they denied me coverage and basically told me it was my problem. I thought this was really weird. I had no money to pay for the bills at the time, but i held on to them. After a few months they stopped sending bills to me.
Since then, no one has contacted me to make payments, and due to the forged look of the bills, they have remained unpaid. I am now planning on another trip into the US and am planning on using the same insurance company.
I was wondering if the unpaid 'bills' will affect my ability to get insurance and will this become a problem if i have to go to a hospital during my stay?

Canadian without health insurance had surgery in france, can hospital collect money?

Canadian Travel Insurance | Posted by admin
May 08 2009

Hiya, I’m just trying to figure out when and how the hospital here is going to collect money from me? I broke my wrist and expect it to cost around 10 000Euros. Does any one know if debt collectors track you down in other countries and if they have jurisdiction there? How long do I have, and will they want it all at once, what if I can’t pay it (since I can’t)? Do I get put in jail if I don’t pay? Would I get extradited or put in jail in Canada, or maybe in Germany since I’m traveling there next. Anyone have any clues?
