Hi, I am currently doing a project for university on the ash cloud. As part of this I will need to gather as much information as possible on peoples experiences. If you were affected by the flight cancellations in any way, or dealt with issues that arised due to the cancellations, I would be extremely grateful if you could share your story with me.
Any information you have on problems with insurance, how you were treated by your hotel/travel company if you were stranded abroad or any issues with alternative transport would also be very helpful.
Thank you in advance!

There are no standardized coverage when it comes to travel insurance. Each policy has its own unique benefits, restrictions, and exclusions. You should read your policy very carefully to be sure that you fully understand what is covered. The most comprehensive travel insurance is known as any reason cancellation. This coverage allows you to cancel your trip for any reason. No need to be sick, have a loved one die, or be the victim of a natural disaster. This form of travel insurance is the only one that will likely pay off for those that cancel Gulf Coast vacations due to the oil spill.

I had a flight to Gran Canaria which was forced to be cancelled as government closed the UK Airspace because of the Volcano Ash.
I submitted my application form to Groupama Travel Insurance but they say there is no section of our policy which would say we would cover the costs occurred due to your flights cancellations
Ryanair is supposed to pay back the flight tickets but other items such as hotel bookings (first night was charged), etc remain.
This is unfair
What can I do? Where can I complain to?

I’m travelling to Brazil in a couple of weeks’ time via London Heathrow. I’m trying to wade my way through the quagmire that is travel insurance policy wording at the moment and need some help.
One of my concerns is that I am flying from another UK airport to Heathrow with BA. At Heathrow I am due to catch a connecting flight to Brazil with non-BA-affiliated TAM airlines (presumably this means I need to collect my baggage at Heathrow and recheck it?). Given the looming BA strikes I’m concerned about the possibility of missing my connecting flight if there are delays/cancellations of BA flights from my home town to Heathrow. I can’t seem to find insurance that specifically advises whether I would be covered in such an event.
Another concern is baggage loss. I’ve come across lots of policies that claim £1,000 or even £1,500 "lost baggage cover", but when the policy wording is examined what is actually being offered is usually something paltry like £50 per lost bag. Therefore, as I will only be taking one case (the contents of which will be valued at considerably more than £50) is there any point is purchasing insurance? This seems to be the same with medical cover too.
Any travel insurance advice?
Thank you in advance.
I need to change my flight to a different date, but since my travel insurance won’t give me a refund and the cancellation/change fees are pretty high, is it possible for me to just not show up to that flight and book a flight on a different date? I’m basically trying to get out of the change/cancellation fees. Will I be billed some kind of cancellation fee if I don’t show up? I understand I won’t be getting a refund, I have no other choice.
I bought the Trip protection below, but Priceline refuses to refund me my money so I can book a different flight.
Trip Protection includes:
Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption (reimbursement up to the full cost of your trip)
Medical Expenses (up to 00) and Emergency Evacuation (up to ,000)
Travel Accident Protection (up to ,000)
Baggage Protection (up to 0 for stolen, lost or damaged bags and personal effects)
24 Hour Worldwide Assistance Services

• These airline tickets are non-refundable, non-transferable and non-changeable. The Rental Car reservation included in your itinerary is non-refundable, non-transferable and non-changeable even if the reservation is not used.
What do the insurance carriers require for me to get the refund in the event I can’t make the flight on the trip home??
The airline won’t change the departure times either. I didn’t ask them if they would doit for a penalty, but I will try it. I also checked out AIG "Cancel For Any Reason Coverage" and they want 9.88 so I can miss the scheduled flight home. But I will still have to spend $ to book a later flight.
I bought return airfares to Australia with my girlfriend (from Canada) when we were still together 3 months ago. We didn’t really discuss everything properly when i made the purchase, all i knew was that i wanted her to come home with me to meet my family and friends, we were both really excited about it then, but now i am feeling the repercussions of that decision.
We split up 1 month ago, it was initially mutual, we felt we were too different for each other (goals, direction in life), but now i feel i have made a big mistake in letting her go because i still have feelings for her.
We leave for Australia in 2 weeks, im still not over her, she has already moved on emotionally and when we broke up we convinced eachother that when in Oz, we would just be travelling buddies. I don’t think i can bring myself to do this, it will be too hard.
However! it gets a little more complicated…
The tickets i bought are non-refundable, and my travel insurance doesn’t cover cancellations, only medical so, i either cancel her flight and lose 00 or get her to come with me and tag along with me as a ‘friend’. At this stage in the game i feel it is too soon for me to label her as a friend because im not over her completely, so travelling overseas with her will just make it ten times worse, and i fear i won’t have any fun.
If you could give me some insight into what i could do, or if anyone has any similar stories they can share with me that would help me out just the same!!
Basically , we are planning a trip to Western Europe from May 18th – August 15th or so…
We just bought our tickets days ago, and I am interested in buying travel insurance anyway so that I have medical coverage while on leave from my job.
I am concerned now that since the EU released a statement asking for their citizens to avoid unnecessary travel to the US or Mexico, they might also restrict U.S. citizens if it gets worse. If this happens, and we have already bought tickets… will we be left holding the bag?
Or in that situation will American Airlines refund our tickets since its outside our control, or will they make us reschedule? If neither, then is there a travel insurance policy that would cover for this type of concern??
Thanks!
My family is planning a vacation for next summer and our travel agent suggested we get travel cancellation and interruption insurance- is it really necessary?
I’m flying to Washington DC on thursday out of Birmingham International via Amsterdam. We have heavy snow right now and lots of airport delays.
My flights are booked through a travel agent and it’s all booked through as one trip, so my question is, if my flight from Birmingham is delayed because of the weather and I miss my connection in Amsterdam, will they put me on another flight? In the event that they won’t, I have travel insurance, would missed flights due to weather normally be covered under this?
